Where Have All the Cowboys Gone (cue Paula Cole)

As a fella from down south, it’s no surprise to walk into Walmart and see another fella dressed in Wranglers (the John Wayne type, not Bret Favre), nice button up shirt tucked in with a big ‘ole belt buckle and pair a boots. Sometimes a nice pair of boots; shiny, lookin’ sharp, or, boots covered in mud (or something else…it happens). I appreciate either really. Some might call ’em hicks er cow pokes or what-not, but I call ’em workers, hard workers at that. I appreciate seeing a man or a woman that just put in a day of hard work, not just the kind you use your mind-brain, but the kind that leaves ya sore in the morning, and takes a few days to wash off your hands. If you’ve not done this kind of work (and I’m certainly not suggesting that ONLY cowboys do this type of work) I encourage you to find a day and break a sweat. It’s good for the soul, folks, and damn good exercise too.

But back to cowboys… I’m a part of a whole mess of organizations and committees and it just seems the older I get, the lazier those around me are. I’ve determined to figure it out, and being a tech-savvy guy myself, I hate to blame technology, but I fear that might be the culprit. Now, don’t get me wrong, you can sweat working behind the screen. In fact right now I’m breakin’ a sweat just a typin’ this here blog, but it’s not the same as “hay” sweat, or “helping a friend move” sweat, or “cleaning out a garage” sweat or “working in the yard” sweat..it’s really not. Seems some folks today would rather just pass than to put in that kind of sweat anymore. But not cowboys. I want to work with them. Their work ethic is enough to downright cause ya to be proud to work next to ’em. They’re not scared to sweat or go the extra mile to do it right.

Where have all the cowboys gone? Is the RODEO time yet? Maybe I could recruit one of them to whip some folks into shape, but, it may just be too late.
